Celebrate Latino Conservation Week at Lake Pleasant

In honor of Latino Conservation Week during September 14-22, the staff at the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department will be offering two bilingual programs on Sept. 20 at Lake Pleasant Regional Park- an indoor talk at the Discovery Center, and an outdoor evening hike meeting at Cottonwood Day Use (north entry).

Jacqueline Vallejos, Maricopa County interpretive ranger, said both programs will provide interesting information about desert creatures and immerse hikers in the desert surroundings. For example, one of the things participants will learn is if birds eat snakes.

“People are often interested in the macabre, and typically unaware of the frightening ways that small predators subdue their prey,” said Vallejos, who enjoys being out in the parks revealing the mysteries of nature. “For example: tarantula hawk wasps paralyze their prey and eat them alive.”

Vallejos said she also enjoys taking people on night hikes.

“The night hikes provide opportunities to see creatures you typically don't see in the daytime, hopefully scorpions!”

Stranger Things: Sonoran Edition Nature is full of surprises. Like a TV drama, if you pay attention, nature reveals odd characters and strange relationships.

REUNIRSE: Cottonwood Day Use, Norte del parque principal
No se requiere registración.

Night Hike: Enjoy both the Arizona sunset as it gives way to the moonlit darkness on this beautiful evening hike. The trail is 3 miles (4.8 km) with rocky terrain, and a 400 foot (122m) elevation gain, featuring a lookout point at the peak. This ranger-led hike with interpretive stops along the way to learn about and enjoy our desert surroundings. Bring study shoes, water, and a flashlight (no headlamps please). No dogs please. We meet on the north side of Lake Pleasant, not at the main entry. To get there, take Castle Hot Springs Road north until the road ends; turn right to the ranger booth. Entry is $7 per vehicle, or an annual pass, or your same day receipt. Follow the main road into the park, and park at Cottonwood Day Use on the right. We will meet there by the bathrooms.

MEETING LOCATION: Cottonwood Day Use, North of main park

No registration required.

Please note: Summer programs may be canceled on short notice due to severe weather, including extreme heat events. The MC Parks website is the best resource for verifying the program’s current status, so please check the program listing prior to departing for your scheduled program.
